Why we teach your child Art:

At All Saints our vision for Art and Design is that we provide every child with a broad and balanced Art curriculum which engages, challenges and inspires them. We believe that Art provides children with opportunities to develop and extend skills to express their individual interests and ideas, whilst also contributing to the development of the child emotionally, aesthetically, spiritually, intellectually and socially. Through giving our children a high-quality Art education, it equips them with the skills to explore, experiment, create and invent their own work of art. As artists, children should be able to critically evaluate their work and the work of others, taking influence from well-known artists and adapting their work accordingly. As their skill set progresses, they should understand how art has changed their landscape, culture and history.

We aim for every child to leave All Saints Primary School with a range of Artistic skills, knowledge and an understanding and love of Art, which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Our objectives in the teaching of Art are to:

To motivate children to participate in a range of Art that will develop the children’s skills.

To encourage children to apply these skills and their knowledge learnt during Art lessons.

To provide children with the confidence to apply these skills to many different life experiences both now and in their future.

To motivate children to take responsibility for their work but also to develop a respect for the abilities of other children, and encourage them to collaborate and cooperate across a range of activities and experiences together.

To learn to respect and work with each other and with adults, thus developing a better understanding of themselves.

To develop an understanding of different times and cultures, through their work on famous artists, designers and craftspeople.

To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

To develop and understand a range of Art and Design vocabulary.

What our curriculum looks like:

EYFS:

In the EYFS, the building blocks to Art are taught through ‘Communication and Language’, ‘Physical Development’ and ‘Expressive Arts and Design’. Therefore, working towards the Early Learning Goals for each area.

Key Stage 1 Pupils should be taught:

To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.

To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

To learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Key Stage 2 Pupils should be taught:

To develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.

To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay].

To learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.

How we teach Art:

Our Art curriculum has been planned and sequenced in line with National Curriculum objectives and with cross-curricular links where appropriate. Furthermore, the curriculum has been created to build on what has previously been taught in other year groups to embed key Art knowledge and encourage effective progression towards clearly defined end points.

There are lots of ways in which you can support your child with their Art learning at home.

Create a dedicated art space in your home with accessible materials and tools.
Introduce famous artists and art movements through books, documentaries and online resources.
Create art projects that combine art with reading, storytelling, grammar and other topics.
